Lighting the Spark of Innovation in Kodagu: A Day at the RAMP Incubation Workshop
On a crisp morning of 25 November 2025, the Seminar Hall at the Coorg Institute of Technology, Ponnampet, slowly started filling with eager young minds. What began as a quiet gathering soon transformed into a vibrant space buzzing with dreams, ideas, and possibilities.
More than 178 engineering students, along with faculty members and aspiring innovators, walked in with curiosity — but walked out with confidence, clarity, and a newfound entrepreneurial spark.
This was no ordinary workshop. It was the Incubation Workshop under the RAMP (Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance) Scheme, a milestone moment for the startup ambitions of Kodagu district.
The Beginning of Something Bigger
As the clock struck 10 AM, the hall lit up with a sense of purpose.
Dr. M. C. Kariappa, President of CIT, inaugurated the event, emphasizing how engineering talent in rural regions is ready to compete with the world — all they need is direction and opportunity. Presiding over the function was Shri. Hanumantharaya K, Joint Director of DIC Madikeri, whose presence added depth and credibility to the occasion.
The event also had the esteemed presence of:
- Dr. M. Basavaraj, Principal, CIT
- Shri. Raghu C. N., Deputy Director, DIC Madikeri
- Shri. Gopinath Rao, IEDS Dy. Director (Rtd.), MSME, Govt. of India
- Sagar B. T., MSME Manager, Vision Karnataka Foundation
Each dignitary brought their expertise, but more importantly, they brought hope — hope that innovation could emerge from the quiet hills of Kodagu just as powerfully as from any metro.
When Guidance Turns Into Inspiration
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the session by Shri. Gopinath Rao, the workshop’s expert mentor. What made his talk special was not just knowledge, but the way he connected with students.
Shri. Gopinath Rao, spoke about:
- How incubation centres can act as launchpads for young innovators
- Government funding schemes and grants that students rarely know about
- How engineering students can convert simple ideas into scalable startups
- The importance of mentorship in shaping entrepreneurial journeys
A Ripple That Will Soon Become a Wave
Workshops come and go — but this one felt different.
The energy in the hall, the questions students asked, and the eagerness for mentorship signalled a shift. Kodagu’s students were not just listening; they were preparing.
The event created:
- A new sense of belief among students
- Stronger bonds between academia, government bodies, and industry
- The beginning of a collaborative innovation ecosystem
It became clear that this workshop would not end within four walls. It would echo into future classrooms, startups, and innovations emerging from the district.
What Happens Next: Turning Momentum Into Movement
- Build a Strong Mentorship Network
Creating a direct bridge between aspiring innovators and experienced professionals is the first step.
- Students will be paired with alumni founders, technologists, and industry mentors.
- Regular mentoring circles, virtual check-ins, and expert AMAs will ensure students stay on track with their ideas.
- This continuous guidance will help them refine prototypes, validate their solutions, and avoid early-stage pitfalls.
- Strengthen the Incubation Centre
The Incubation Centre will evolve into a true innovation laboratory.
- Upgraded tools, testing equipment, and workspaces will empower students to convert concepts into working prototypes.
- Dedicated innovation managers will support students through ideation, design, testing, and pre-launch stages.
- The centre will serve as a hub for hackathons, innovation sprints, and collaboration sessions across departments.
- Create a Student Startup Fund
Because ideas need fuel, not just motivation.
- A structured seed fund will provide early-stage capital for the most promising student-led innovations.
- Micro-grants and milestone-based funding will help teams test ideas, run pilots, and reach proof-of-concept faster.
- Students will also receive guidance on fundraising, grants, and pitching for government/CSR innovation schemes.
- Enable Powerful Industry Partnerships
Real-world exposure accelerates real innovation.
- Tie-ups with technology companies, manufacturing units, research labs, and startups will unlock fresh opportunities.
- Students will get access to internships, live projects, and industry challenges where they can apply their learning.
- These partnerships will also help startups scale with expert insights, customer feedback, and market-ready validation.
